In August and September of the 2009-2010 election cycle, more than 17 million dollars was donated by special interest groups to individual California state legislators (according to data provided by Maplight.org). The influenced bills covered a whole range of policy - including credit reporting, health care, environmental policy and recycling, education, pensions, land use and planning, and corrections. The list continues... How can we, the people, compete with $17M used to purchase votes -- votes determining the spending of our tax dollars?
